THE HUMAN MICROBIOME & THE MISSING MICROBES

THE HUMAN MICROBIOME & THE MISSING MICROBES:

Having a healthy balance of microbiome and a good diversity is better understood now than ever before after the HUMAN MICROBIOME PROJECT. Loss of this diversity and balance is linked to many of the modern diseases including both Type 1& 2 Diabetes, Atherosclerosis, Brain Disorders ranging from Dementia to Alzeimer’s . Let’s understand that mutual existence is very important to enjoy good health and the Microbiota should be considered as an organ by itself and not just bugs within us .

For every one cell we have in our body , there are 10 microbial cells and they outnumber us by the number of genes as well. Hence we are a minority within us . However little attention is paid to these masters of orchestra who decide largely our health and disease. Differentiating the gut bacteria into good and bad bacteria seems to less relevant compared to having the correct species and diversity. For example some  of the pathogenic bacteria like Clostridum difficile is seen in 60 -70 of the newborns .However, they become pathogenic when they outnumber the non pathogenic bugs.
The Human Microbiome Project has identified 2 main family of Microbiomes : Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes . Firmicutes have an appetite for fat and are good at digesting complex carbs while the Bacteroidetes limit these actions . Studies have shown that a higher F/ B ratio is associated with Obesity as well as Diabetes , hypertension , Heart disease etc.
The Gut Microbiome play a important role in our health and disease through Inflammation pathways modulated through our Immune System. This is not surprising given the fact that more than 70% of our Immune System reside in our gut sub mucosal layer. Reduced bacterial diversity , overgrowth of the pathogenic bacteria and Candida lead to an overactive Immune System  leading to Chronic ( Silent ) Inflammation which underlies most if not all the chronic dehgenerative diseases including cancers . Chronic inflammation in the gut also leads to Leaky Gut Syndrome and this pathology leads to a leaky brain . Strong scientific evidence now exists linking chronic gut inflammation and many of the Systemic and even Brain disorders . This includes Chilhood and Adult Obesity , both Type 1&2 Diabetes , Autoimmune Diseases, Cancers and they may also be linked to  the explosive increase in ADHD, Autism, Dementia, Alzeimers , Parkinson’s

So we now come to the big question of why the increase in many diseases affecting both the body and the brain . Enough scientific evidence now exists to show that the root cause lies in the alteration of the gut Microbiome through loss of diversity and balance . It is critical that medical practioners and the public pay attention to these information and limit the onslaught on our health and our children’s health. The main reasons that need urgent attention are :
1. Taking Antibiotics before and during pregnancy
2. Delivery by LSCS rather than vaginally . Babies born by LSCS route have predominantly Staphylococcus compared to Lactobacillus in the babies born vaginally .
3. Breast feeding less than a month
4. Recurrent childhood infections like Otitis Media , Tonsillitis , URTI etc treated with Antibiotics .
5. Antibiotics use in adults
6. Stress
7. Oversanitisation
AND MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL : HIGH INTAKE OF REFINED CARBS , SUGAR , HFCS , SOFT DRINKS .

HELP YOUR GUT MICTOBIOME & HELP YOURSELF IN RETURN BY :

1. High Fiber Diet
2. Probiotics with diversity
3. Prebiotics
4. Probiotic Enema
5. Fecal Microbial Transfer ( FMT) done in some centers have shown remarkable results even in conditions like ALS ( Multiple Sclerosis ), Crohn’s Disease .
